Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, filed documents on Monday to sell shares to the public for the first time. The company plans to list its stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT. If successful, the sale would allow the firm to raise as much as $100 billion US.

This offering could become the largest initial public offering in history. It would surpass the $86 billion US raised by SpaceX in June of this year. The move also positions Anthropic to go public before its main rival, OpenAI. Both companies are expected to pursue major stock debuts in the coming months.

The filing reveals that the five-year-old startup has not yet turned a profit. Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion US for the first half of 2026. This figure is a sharp increase from the $13 billion US loss the company recorded in the same period last year. Despite these financial results, the company's revenue is growing rapidly.

Private investors valued the firm at $965 billion US earlier this year. Reports indicate that the public offering could push that valuation to $1.5 trillion US or possibly $2 trillion US. At a $1.5 trillion US valuation, Anthropic would rank among the most valuable public companies in the world, comparable to Tesla.

The capital raised from the sale would provide resources to accelerate the company's expansion. The final valuation and offering price remain uncertain as the process moves forward. The IPO would also increase the personal wealth of CEO Dario Amodei and his sister, co-founder Daniela Amodei, by billions of dollars.

The filing arrives weeks after Dario Amodei published an essay arguing that advanced AI models should be developed more slowly. In that writing, he warned that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity. The company now moves toward a Wall Street debut next month with a target that may redefine the scale of public market offerings.
