AI Giant's Valuation Explosion Turns Early Backers Into Billionaires Before the Bell Rings
Investors who backed Anthropic at various stages are seeing their portfolios surge in value, with some stakes already worth billions ahead of the company's anticipated public listing.

Anthropic’s impending stock market debut is set to reshape the financial landscape for its investors.
The company is expected to go public later this year with a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion. Even if the final IPO price lands lower, the latest private market valuation of $965 billion has already generated massive wealth for the venture capitalists and early backers who supported the AI lab. According to data from Bloomberg, the stakes held by these key players are already worth billions of dollars at that current private price point.
Eric Schmidt, the former head of Google, is among those enjoying a significant windfall. He made an investment in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, when the startup was valued at just $461 million, according to PitchBook data. At that early stage, the risk was high, but the reward has been substantial. Today, Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company. Even without the potential boost from the IPO, his share is valued at nearly $10 billion based on the current private market price.
Later-stage investors have also seen their capital multiply rapidly. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic last year, at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive late-stage bet is now worth $17 billion. If the IPO proceeds as anticipated at the higher valuation, this position has the potential to double in value again, further cementing its status as one of the largest wins for recent tech investors.
Menlo Ventures and Sequoia Capital represent two other major players with significant holdings. Menlo Ventures led Anthropic’s Series D round and has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. That cumulative investment is now valued at $14 billion. Sequoia, a long-time giant in the venture capital world, entered the picture only earlier this year. At that point, Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital.
Sound Ventures and Spark Capital illustrate how early, smaller bets can balloon into massive returns. Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm. Meanwhile, Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in that same 2023 Series C round when the valuation was $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion.
The trajectory of these investments highlights the explosive growth of the leading AI lab. For the Midwest reader, this serves as a reminder of how concentrated wealth is becoming in the tech sector, where early access to high-growth companies can transform modest checks into life-changing sums. As Anthropic moves closer to its public listing, the focus will shift from private valuations to public market performance. However, the foundation of wealth for its backers has already been laid, with billions in paper profits secured before the company even begins trading on the open market.
