Bloomington police arrested a suspect on Sunday morning after a shooting left at least seven people injured near the Indiana University campus. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street, according to Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo.
Pedigo stated that officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots in a large crowd. Witnesses indicated that a man carrying a gun ran from the scene. Officers took one individual into custody and found a firearm in the vicinity. The suspect was booked into jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of a firearm. Pedigo noted that the detained individual has a pending felony weapons charge in Hendricks County, though it is not yet confirmed if this person fired the shots.
The seven victims consisted of four males and three females, with ages ranging from 17 to 27. Police identified all victims as residents of the Indianapolis area. None of the injured were Indiana University students. Pedigo said witnesses who spoke to detectives stated the group had traveled to Bloomington to party and celebrate Halloween.
All seven victims were last reported to be in stable condition. Three of them required surgery. Investigators recovered shell casings from two different guns at the scene. While the exact number of rounds fired is unknown, witnesses reported hearing between four and six shots. Police are currently reviewing surveillance video from locations along Kirkwood Avenue as part of the ongoing investigation.
