Illinois residents can still register to vote on Election Day, Tuesday, by presenting two forms of identification at participating polling places. Indiana voters do not have this option. They must already be registered to cast a ballot this year. With the election occurring in two days, both states offer online tools to verify registration status and locate specific voting sites.

The 2026 midterm cycle is currently in its final phase. Control of both chambers of Congress is being decided in this election. Millions of voters will also choose candidates for dozens of local and statewide offices. In Illinois, voters will select a new U.S. Senator to fill an open seat. In Indiana, the electorate will choose members of Congress and a new Secretary of State.

Voters in Illinois can check their status through the state Board of Elections website. The system requires a user’s first name, last name, date of birth, and five-digit ZIP code. Once verified, the platform displays the specific districts for which the voter is eligible. It also lists the assigned polling place for the Tuesday election.

Regular and online registration deadlines have passed in Illinois. However, the state permits what is known as Grace Period Registration. This process allows eligible citizens to register and vote on the same day. Applicants must show two forms of ID. At least one document must include a mailing address. The state Board of Elections maintains a list of acceptable documentation.

The same identification rule applies to voters who need to update their registered address. Once a voter completes the registration or address change process at the polling location, they can cast a ballot immediately. This provision applies to all participating locations across the state.

Indiana voters use a separate website to check their registration status. The tool also provides information on polling place locations. Unlike Illinois, Indiana does not offer same-day registration. Consequently, any voter who is not currently registered is ineligible to vote in the 2026 election.

Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Polls will be open for the statewide and local races in both states. Voters in Illinois and Indiana should verify their details before heading to their assigned sites.
