A Detroit family is asking the public for help covering medical costs after their five-year-old daughter was shot on Halloween night. Elvanya was recovering in a hospital as of late October.

Detroit police say the shooting happened on Iroquois Street. Investigators believe gunfire came from outside and entered the residence. Elvanya was in the back of the house wearing her costume when the bullet struck her on Saturday.

Her brother, Elijah Martin, described the sequence of events. He said their mother heard two loud gunshots in quick succession. "The first one, boom it was a big old boom, then there was another one 10 seconds later that’s when my sister finally said I think I was shot and my mama rushed her to the hospital," Martin told FOX 2.

The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to pay for her ongoing treatment. Martin noted that Elvanya is walking around and was recently taken off oxygen. "Knowing the trauma that comes behind being shot. Being targeted or anything it’s like where can we go for these kids to be kids," he said.

The family acknowledges that emotional healing will be part of the process. They are looking for answers and justice as the investigation continues.

Detroit police state they are making progress on the case. They have asked anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speakup.
