The Federal Election Commission lost access to its electronic filing system on Monday evening, halting the public reporting of political spending just one week before the November 3 midterm elections. An internal email reviewed by Reuters confirmed that hackers targeted the agency's website, rendering the platform for submitting financial disclosures inaccessible. The agency's IT team began working to restore service immediately after the disruption was detected.

In a public statement, the FEC confirmed that its electronic filing system was offline while staff worked on the repair. The commission, which monitors the finances of candidates and political committees, clarified that the website remained available for searching past reports. The agency declined to provide further details regarding the nature of the outage. The system has been down since approximately 10 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday.

The timing of the failure creates a gap in financial transparency during the final stretch of the campaign. The outage blocks organizations from submitting mandatory 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports. These documents detail how much specific political groups are allocating to individual races. Without these filings, the public cannot track the latest expenditure data from campaign finance entities.

Steven Mele, a partner at the political finance compliance firm MBA Consulting Group, noted that he has not seen a similar failure in his 26 years in the industry. Mele stated that the result is less disclosure on the elections until the system is fixed. The FEC does not administer the general election, so the outage does not affect the ability of voters to cast ballots. The disruption impacts only the reporting of funds raised and spent.

The incident occurs as President Donald Trump's Republican party seeks to maintain its majority in Congress for the next two years. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI did not immediately return messages seeking comment on the attack. The FEC's status page indicated that the filing system remained down as of the latest update.
