Democratic candidate Chris Mann has raised $477,000 more than incumbent Kris Kobach in the comparable funding period for the 2026 Kansas Attorney General race. By contrast, Kobach has received $22,000 less in recent donations than he did during the same period in 2022. This financial shift marks a departure from the 2022 election, where Kobach defeated Mann by 1.5 percentage points.

Kobach, the Republican incumbent, campaigns on his record of achieving the lowest crime rate in Kansas in 56 years. More than 50 Kansas sheriffs have endorsed his campaign, citing his "proven law-and-order leadership." His platform includes challenging Biden-era laws and representing parents in disputes over student social transitions in public schools. He also collaborated with the U.S. Department of Justice on a legal challenge to end in-state tuition for non-citizens raised in Kansas.

Mann, the Democratic challenger, has never held elected office. He previously served as a police officer in Lawrence until a collision with a drunk driver caused nerve and muscle damage that forced his retirement. He later worked as a prosecutor in Wyandotte County and for the Kansas Securities Commission. His campaign focuses on removing partisanship from the attorney general's office and expanding resources for law enforcement and domestic violence shelters.

The candidates are revisiting the same matchup from 2022. Kobach won that race by a narrow margin, which Mann described as the smallest in a statewide election that year. Mann stated that his 2026 campaign differs because he expects to raise more funds and visit more parts of the state. He argued that the office has focused on political points rather than protecting residents for the past three and a half years.

Kobach's political history includes serving in the George W. Bush administration, where he helped design a post-9/11 national security system for monitoring male visitors from Muslim-majority countries. He chaired the Kansas Republican Party from 2007 to 2009 and won the secretary of state office in 2010 by more than 20 percent. He lost his 2018 bid for governor to Laura Kelly by four percentage points and lost the 2020 Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.

Mann's website states that the attorney general's office should not promote partisan agendas. He has advocated for fighting AI-generated fraud and supporting local police through expanded training and mental health resources. Kobach, who holds a Ph.D. from Oxford and a law degree from Yale, previously served on a short-lived voter fraud commission appointed by President Donald Trump.

The 2026 race pits a candidate with a long history in state and national politics against a former law enforcement officer and prosecutor. The funding data indicates a significant increase in financial support for the Democratic side relative to the previous cycle.
