New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted a Spanish-language video on X on Friday offering guidance to residents on how to handle interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The message accumulated more than 7 million views within hours of its release. In the clip, Mamdani stated that ICE agents cannot enter private spaces such as homes, schools, hospitals, or private workplace areas without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.

The mayor emphasized the right to remain silent during these encounters. He described the current period as very frightening for many people. Mamdani has long opposed the federal agency's presence in New York. During his campaign and early tenure, he called for abolishing ICE. He also directed the NYPD to limit its assistance with civil immigration enforcement.

Conservative leaders on social media quickly challenged the video's content. Many argued the mayor was encouraging residents to obstruct federal law enforcement. Others suggested the guide primarily benefited illegal immigrants rather than the general public. The post sparked a debate over the role of local leaders in federal immigration matters.

Republican lawmakers from across the country joined the criticism online. Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas noted that Mamdani became a citizen less than a decade ago. Gill said it should be insulting to Americans that the mayor of the largest city is coaching illegal aliens in a foreign language on how to avoid lawful deportation. Dean Cain, an actor, posted that anyone here illegally has no reason to fear ICE. He called the mayor dangerous.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah pointed out that the video never urged viewers to abide by United States laws. Lee stated the guide was not made for the benefit of all people in the United States. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina asserted that anyone here illegally is not a New Yorker. Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio simply labeled the act as treason.

Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren described the scene in 2026 as foreign-born Democrats instructing illegal residents on how to evade the law. She argued they remain in the country to free-load off the hard work of others. Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, called the statement dangerous incitement. He claimed the video was full of disturbing falsehoods that could put lives in danger.

Mamdani's office did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. The mayor recently signed an executive order strengthening New York City's sanctuary policies. That order directs city agencies to limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It also requires expanded know your rights materials and training for city employees. The order protects personal information and sets protocols for handling ICE requests to access city property or records.
