Melat Kiros won the election for Colorado's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, according to an Associated Press call.

The result makes the 29-year-old the first woman of Generation Z to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Kiros, an Ethiopian immigrant and lawyer, secured the victory in a district that includes most of Denver and has consistently voted for Democrats.

Her path to the general election began with a decisive primary win against Diana DeGette, a 15-term incumbent. That race drew national attention as voters expressed frustration with long-serving members of Congress and demanded political change.

Kiros is one of at least five winning House candidates this cycle who received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America or its local chapters. This outcome more than triples the number of DSA-endorsed members currently in Congress.

The group of winners generally supports policies to expand the social safety net, including Medicare for All and universal childcare. They also advocate for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ending U.S. military aid to Israel.

Kiros faced criticism during the campaign from independent candidate Shimon Blau, who accused her of using antisemitic rhetoric regarding the war in Gaza. Kiros maintained that her critique targets the state of Israel rather than the Jewish people.

She joins only one other lawmaker under the age of 30, Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost, who became the first Gen Z member of the House in 2022.

In a February interview with NPR, Kiros argued that her policy positions resonate with younger voters who want bold action. She stated that young people understand they are in the fight of their lives and need leaders willing to pursue changes without waiting for permission.
