Speaker Mike Johnson has framed the upcoming midterm election as a choice between building on American foundations and tearing them down, warning that a Democratic House would be held hostage by the Democratic Socialists of America. In an op-ed published in USA Today, Johnson argued that the current Democratic Party has bent the knee to its far-left wing, a shift he described as a departure from the centrist tradition that once defined the group. He told voters that these are not normal times, and that the stakes involve a much larger choice between two completely different visions for the nation. Johnson emphasized that while midterm elections are usually a referendum on the president, this cycle presents a fateful question about whether to preserve the principles of individual liberty and limited government.

Johnson pointed to recent events in France as a dark harbinger of what could happen in the United States if Democrats take control. He described the violent riots rocking the country, including the smashing of buildings and cars and the looting of hundreds of shops, as the inevitable result of decades of misguided policy choices. In his assessment, French leaders abandoned principles of assimilation and fiscal restraint, allowing their nation to be looted by far-left radicals. Johnson suggested that this chaos, driven by lax immigration enforcement and suffocating regulation, offers a preview of the instability that could unfold in American cities and towns if the party’s new socialist cadre gains power.

During an interview on Fox News, Johnson intensified his warning, stating that if Democrats took control of Congress, the result would be chaos every day for two years. He noted that the polls were underestimating Republican enthusiasm and that he was traveling the country nonstop to highlight the contrast between common sense and the radical left. Johnson said that the incoming Democratic group would be crazier even than the Obama and Biden-Harris years because of their far lurch to the left. He urged voters to ask themselves which set of policies is better for their families, arguing that turning the keys over to angry Democrats would mean retribution against the current administration.

The Speaker also cited the admission of Democratic strategist James Carville, who said he would rather Republicans keep the House than Democrats win it by five seats. Carville’s reasoning was that his party would be held hostage to the DSA, a sentiment Johnson embraced in his op-ed. Johnson argued that even a narrow Democratic victory would inevitably cede unprecedented power to this growing socialist cadre, whose stated aim is to remake the party and end the free market system. He described the DSA platform as calling for eradicating borders and prisons, granting mass amnesty to illegal immigrants, and abolishing the Senate, noting that these ideas are no longer confined to the fringes of the party.

Despite the urgent warnings, Johnson spent the past week detailing the accomplishments of the current Republican majority. He highlighted that House Republicans delivered the largest tax cut in U.S. history, which he said brought down costs and cut taxes for American families. In his op-ed, he specified that the Working Families Tax Cuts ensured an average $10,900 boost in take-home pay for a family of four. This included no tax on tips and overtime, a bigger standard deduction, and an expanded child tax credit. Johnson credited these measures with helping to unleash American energy dominance and adding more than a million private-sector jobs to the economy.

Johnson also pointed to the $1.6 trillion reduction in wasteful federal spending and the creation of the first-ever nationwide school choice program. He noted that the House launched Trump Accounts, which open investment accounts for children born between 2025 and 2028 that grow with the stock market. These achievements, he argued, were delivered despite Democrats forcing three government shutdowns, including the longest in U.S. history. Johnson described this period as one where Republicans worked with the slimmest House majority since the Great Depression, yet still managed to pass historic legislation and reshape the economic landscape.

The Speaker emphasized that the Republican record included securing the border and making streets safer, contrasting this with what he called the Democratic agenda of opening borders wide and defunding police. He stated that people are looking at record over rhetoric and that the Democrats voted against all of the major initiatives that have improved the economy and public safety. Johnson’s message to voters was that the current administration is delivering on its promises, while the opposition is preparing to repeal the Working Families Tax Cut and undo the progress made on the economy and national security.

Johnson’s campaign strategy relies on the belief that voters are savvy and paying attention to the contrast between the two parties. He described the Democratic Party as being taken over by an insurgent left, with the new bloc being even further left than the previous progressive groups. He argued that this shift is a harbinger of what is to come, and that voters must decide whether to reject the American system or keep building on what made the nation exceptional. The Speaker’s tone was urgent, reflecting the high stakes of the election and the belief that the next two years will define the direction of the country.

As the polls open across the nation, Johnson’s message serves as a rallying cry for Republican candidates. He has traveled to more than 40 districts across 22 states in the past month, aiming to energize the base and secure the slim margin needed to hold the House. The Speaker’s warnings about the DSA and the French model are designed to paint a vivid picture of the potential consequences of a Democratic victory. Meanwhile, the Republican majority continues to highlight its legislative wins, from tax cuts to school choice, as evidence that their approach is working for the American people.
