The dawn of the iPhone Duo arrived today with a mix of excitement and frustration, as customers lined up overnight at Apple retail locations across the globe. The central tension of launch day was the gap between high demand and restricted supply. While the device has been highly anticipated, Apple had previously warned that physical inventory would be tight, and that prediction appears to have materialized for early shoppers.

Apple officially marked the debut of its first foldable smartphone in a press release shared this morning. The company highlighted that stores worldwide filled with customers eager to test the new hardware. Apple team members provided hands-on demonstrations and personalized support, aiming to give the public its first real-world experience with the device’s unique form factor.

Company leadership was visible at key locations to oversee the rollout. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was present at the flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City, alongside retail executive Vanessa Trigub. Meanwhile, CEO John Ternus celebrated the launch in Austin, Texas, at the Domain NORTHSIDE location with retail chief Deirdre O’Brien. Reports indicate Ternus toured Apple’s Austin offices earlier this week, coinciding with the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, an event where Apple serves as the exclusive U.S. streamer.

For many customers who braved the overnight lines, the result was mixed. While some managed to secure a unit, others were turned away due to the limited stock on hand. Apple Store employees guided disappointed shoppers to the Apple Store app, advising them to check for in-store inventory updates scheduled for tomorrow at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. This digital check has become the primary method for determining which specific locations have remaining units available for walk-in purchase.

The launch represents a significant shift for Apple’s retail strategy, relying heavily on digital inventory tracking to manage the surge in demand for a new category of hardware. The company’s decision to limit physical stock suggests a cautious approach to managing the rollout of this new technology. Shoppers who missed out today are now directed to monitor the app for real-time stock levels, a process that may require patience and precision.

As the day progresses, the focus shifts from the initial frenzy to the logistical challenge of distribution. The next step for consumers is the 10 a.m. ET inventory update tomorrow, which will determine who gets to walk into a store and purchase the device without an online reservation. The coming days will reveal whether the limited supply strategy manages demand effectively or continues to create bottlenecks at popular locations.
