Speaker Mike Johnson spent the final week before the election warning that a Democratic-controlled House would bring two years of daily chaos to Washington. In a USA Today op-ed published on October 30, he argued that even a narrow Democratic majority would be held hostage by the Democratic Socialists of America. He pointed to France as a dark harbinger of where such a shift could lead, describing violent riots and looting as the inevitable result of decades of misguided policy choices.

Johnson cited the words of Democratic strategist James Carville, who admitted he would prefer Republicans keep the House rather than Democrats win by five. Johnson noted that Carville called the party hostage to the DSA. The speaker used this admission to frame the election as a choice between preserving foundational American principles and dismantling them.

During an interview on The Ingraham Angle on Fox News, Johnson stated that it would be chaos every day for two years in the next Congress if Democrats took control. He emphasized that the polls were underestimating Republican enthusiasm and that the American people understood this was a contrast election between common sense and crazy.

On Fox and Friends, the speaker highlighted the Republican record by noting that they delivered on promises made in 2024. He claimed Republicans brought down costs and cut taxes with the largest tax cut in U.S. history. He also stated that they made streets safer and were returning to American energy dominance, contrasting these achievements with the Democratic platform.

According to the speaker.gov website, House Republicans delivered $4.6 trillion in lower taxes during the 119th Congress. This was described as the largest middle- and working-class tax cut in history. The party also achieved a $1.6 trillion reduction in wasteful government spending and secured the border.

Other accomplishments listed include the lowest violent crime rate in 126 years and the largest decline in prescription drug costs in 60 years. The Republican majority also passed the first-ever nationwide school choice program and launched Trump Accounts for children. More than one million private sector jobs were added to the economy under their leadership.

Despite these claimed victories, Johnson acknowledged that Republicans forced three government shutdowns. He noted that this included the longest shutdown in U.S. history. He argued that Democrats were responsible for these disruptions while Republicans delivered historic results with the slimmest House majority since the Great Depression.

Results are now coming in on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026. According to the Associated Press, Democrats won control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. This outcome delivers a decisive rebuke to Republican governance in Washington and sets the stage for congressional resistance to President Donald Trump.

Ballotpedia reports that as of 3:01 AM ET on Nov. 4, Democrats had won 211 of the 435 U.S. House races. Republicans had won 122, with 102 races remaining uncalled. This confirms the shift in power that Johnson warned would occur if his party lost its majority.

The Associated Press noted that voters took a wrecking ball to the traditional map of political battlegrounds. Democrats elected candidates in states that were long considered reliably Republican. This included Kansas, South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, and Iowa, all of which had been won easily by President Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer of New York called the results a generational remake of the Senate map. The Associated Press reported that this victory allows Democrats to put up a stronger defense against Trump's second-term agenda. The shift in control of both chambers marks a significant change in the balance of power in the federal government.
