Jordanian security forces captured three armed men on Monday after a three-hour firefight at an abandoned house in the village of Al-Jadeeda. The suspects, linked to a deadly attack at a Greek Orthodox church, refused to surrender and exchanged fire with police. All three were wounded during the clash, with one reported in critical condition.

The state Public Security Directorate announced the arrests in a statement carried by state media. It said the men were hiding in the empty structure and attacked the officers who came to apprehend them. A search of the site yielded firearms and live ammunition. The directorate noted that no security personnel were hurt in the engagement.

The original attack occurred on Friday when three gunmen opened fire during a funeral in the nearby village of Hamoud. The location is in Karak governorate, roughly 120 kilometers southwest of the capital, Amman. The Ministry of Health reported eight deaths and 40 injuries. By Monday, 27 of those wounded remained hospitalized. The director of Prince Ali Military Hospital in Karak confirmed that one patient was still in critical condition following surgery.

Government Communication Minister Mohammad Momani described the capture as a successful joint effort in a post on X. He confirmed that the suspects were detained after refusing to give up. The directorate’s statement described the operation without naming a specific group, stating that "Terrorism has no place among us" and that the suspects had met their "just fate."

Karak is a center for Jordan’s Christian community, which accounts for approximately 300,000 of the country's 11.5 million residents. King Abdullah II sent condolences to the victims' families and ordered a review of national security procedures. He stated that those responsible would face the harshest penalties.

Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities are examining the factors that lead young people to embrace violence. He added that anyone found to have taken part in the attack would be held accountable. The security forces completed their search of the Al-Jadeeda site after securing the three suspects.
