A proposed data center in Pine Island faces a new state environmental review.

The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy and developers Google and Ryan Companies reached a settlement announced Wednesday. The agreement dismisses the lawsuit filed by the advocacy group. In exchange, the developers must complete a new Environmental Assessment Worksheet. They must then submit that document to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

The Pollution Control Agency will conduct a broad analysis of the project. The review will examine water and energy impacts. It will also assess noise and light pollution. Once the study concludes, Google and Ryan Companies have agreed to develop a mitigation plan for those effects.

Kathryn Hoffman, CEO of the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, said the settlement brings transparency back to the process. “For too long, AI data center proposals in Minnesota have been shrouded in secrecy,” Hoffman stated. She added that the agreement provides Pine Island residents with critical information about how the proposal stands to impact their community.

Residents and government agencies will have 60 days to comment on the project after the review. The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy filed the original lawsuit last October. The group argued that the initial environmental review lacked the specificity required by law.

The developers will now proceed with the new assessment. The process ensures that local stakeholders receive detailed data before any final decisions are made on the facility.
