Adam Schwegman faces a $3 million bond after a Topeka judge set the amount during his first court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 29. The bond covers 16 charges filed by Topeka police, including aggravated battery and rape.

Police say Schwegman began the incident around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, by stabbing two people along S.W. Fillmore. His booking charges also include an allegation of rape at that same address.

Within an hour, Schwegman moved up the same road and broke into two homes. Four children were inside one of the houses, including a four-month-old. Officials stated the children were not hurt during the break-ins.

A third victim was stabbed on a nearby street. Schwegman then attacked a 70-year-old woman at Ward Meade Park. He fled the park on foot.

Ron Hubbard was with a friend near the park when he noticed Schwegman. Hubbard said the suspect had been at the park earlier. Hubbard decided to intervene by kicking out his leg to trip Schwegman. The suspect fell into the grass, and the knife landed nearby. Hubbard kicked the knife to the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman.

Schwegman escaped from the pair but was caught by police shortly after. Hubbard said he wanted to stop the harm before it got worse. He noted that the suspect had been acting strangely before the final attack.

The case involves 17 total victims. Schwegman remains in custody while his next court date is scheduled.
