Aaron Ford has won the Nevada gubernatorial election, defeating incumbent Joe Lombardo to become the first Black governor in state history. Ford, the state's attorney general, secured the victory in a race that drew national attention due to Nevada's role as a potential presidential battleground. The result extends Democratic control over state governments in key western states.

Ford has served as the state's top prosecutor since 2019. His campaign emphasized his personal history of growing up in poverty and attending school hungry. He noted that he worked as a math teacher before earning his law degree. Ford also detailed his efforts to challenge the current presidential administration during his tenure.

At a watch party on Tuesday, Ford attributed the win to specific values. "This campaign didn't happen by accident," Ford said. "It happened because of faith, because of family, because of hard work, and because the people of Nevada decided that our best days are still ahead of us."

The race focused heavily on economic issues. Ford campaigned on affordability, promising to address student loan debt and limit the development of artificial intelligence data centers. He proposed pausing new tax abatements for AI projects and opposing construction on federal land. Ford characterized Lombardo as a loyalist to President Donald Trump and criticized the governor for vetoing bills that Ford argued would have aided residents.

Lombardo, a former sheriff, countered by portraying Ford as a threat to the state's business-friendly environment. The incumbent linked Ford to the political strategy of California Governor Gavin Newsom, suggesting it would bring higher taxes and more regulations. Democrats responded by connecting Lombardo to the president's tariffs, noting that Las Vegas tourism suffered a 17 percent drop in Canadian visitors in 2025 amid a trade dispute.

Both candidates faced scrutiny regarding their law enforcement backgrounds. Ford's campaign highlighted an incident where Lombardo avoided a traffic ticket by identifying himself to a police officer. In response, Lombardo's campaign cited Ford's sponsorship of a clemency application for a man convicted of killing a pregnant woman in 2017. Clark County Democratic District Attorney endorsed Lombardo over his fellow Democrat, providing a boost to the incumbent.

Nevada's electorate presents a complex challenge for statewide races. The state features a mix of Democratic strength in Las Vegas and heavily Republican rural areas. Nonpartisan voters constitute nearly 40 percent of the electorate. High population turnover and a large number of working-class and Latino voters make outcomes difficult to predict. Despite having only six electoral college votes, both major parties list Nevada as an early state in their 2028 nominating calendars.

Ford's record as attorney general includes securing millions in settlements from opioid manufacturers. He also successfully sued a student loan servicer and the gaming platform Roblox. Lombardo served in law enforcement for more than 25 years before becoming Clark County sheriff in 2014. He gained national recognition in 2017 for leading the investigation into the Las Vegas mass shooting. Lombardo was born in Japan to a U.S. military family and served in the Army and the Nevada National Guard.

Ford previously served as a state senator. He frequently discussed his childhood experiences, such as his father bringing home stale candy bars from his grocery store job for family dinners. These personal stories formed a central part of Ford's narrative during the campaign.
