JetBlue Airways now charges travelers up to $70 to check a single bag during peak travel periods. The carrier announced the fee increase on Tuesday, marking the third adjustment to baggage prices in less than one year. The move responds to sustained pressure on margins from rising input costs across the aviation sector.

Economy passengers booking more than 24 hours before departure will pay $50 for their first checked bag during non-peak times. That figure rises to $60 if payment occurs within 24 hours of the flight. During peak seasons, such as holidays and summer months, the standard fee is $55, while the late payment fee reaches $70. These rates represent an increase from the previous tiers of $49 and $45.

The airline stated it is adjusting fees to offset rising fuel and operating expenses. JetBlue said the strategy allows the company to maintain competitive base fares. The carrier also noted that the model gives customers the option to pay for baggage only when required. Exemptions apply for holders of co-branded JetBlue credit cards and elite frequent flyer members.

Fuel costs have driven the price hikes. The price of jet fuel has roughly doubled since the start of the Iran war in February. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported jet fuel at $4.44 per gallon for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday. Fuel is the industry's largest expense after labor.

The sector has seen similar moves in the past. Major U.S. airlines raised their own baggage fees earlier this year following JetBlue's initial increase. The current changes were first reported by the Thrifty Traveler blog.
