Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham announced on Monday that freshman quarterback Tommy Carr will start against Michigan State. This marks the first time Whittingham has named a starter at the weekly news conference before a game.
Carr entered the week after leading the Wolverines to a 28-21 victory at Rutgers last Saturday. In that contest, he completed 22 of 27 passes for 266 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 54 yards and two scores. The performance followed a substitution against Penn State last month, where Whittingham benched Bryce Underwood at halftime.
Carr replaced Underwood in that game and helped secure a win over the Nittany Lions. Prior to that, he made his first career start against No. 6 Indiana. In that matchup, he threw an interception and lost a fumble in a 13-6 overtime defeat.
The quarterback is the grandson of College Football Hall of Famers Lloyd Carr and Tom Curtis. He is also the brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr. Michigan currently holds a 5-3 record overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play.
The Wolverines host the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday night. The visitors hold a 2-5 record overall and 0-4 in conference play. The game is scheduled for a night slot in Ann Arbor.
