Winter Park Police Department officers responded to a soccer field in Florida to resolve a conflict between a youth soccer league and the parents of a three-year-old player. The incident, which gained attention after a video went viral on social media, was classified as a civil matter with no arrests made.
The dispute began when the boy, identified as Nevada, scored multiple goals during a match for the i9 Sports league. A coach stated that Nevada was significantly more advanced than his peers, leading to frequent scoring and physical contact with other children. The coach said he rotated Nevada off the field to allow other players equal time. The parents disputed this decision, arguing their son was being removed specifically because of his skill level.
Body camera footage obtained from the police department shows officers speaking with the coach on the field. The coach told the officers that the parents were creating a disturbance by questioning his coaching choices. He said the parents called him ignorant and aggressive. The coach stated he wanted the parents to leave the park immediately. The officers then spoke with the mother and father, who maintained that their son was being punished for playing well.
One officer explained to the parents that the league official believed the parents were interfering with gameplay. The mother told the officers she was confused about why her son was being kicked out for being good at soccer. She said she had signed him up for the activity to play, not to be excluded. The officers noted that the coach specifically mentioned the child's talent but expressed frustration with the parents' demeanor. After the conversation, the parents agreed to leave the park with their son.
A police event report described the parents as cooperative during the interaction. The report noted they were upset that their child was being taken out of the game for playing too well. The parents left the field without issue. The league offered to refund the registration cost to the family. One officer was heard laughing at the end of the video, commenting that he wanted to see the boy play because he is likely good.
The Winter Park Police Department issued a statement confirming that the league requested a response to a disturbance. The department said the family stated the game was over and they were departing. The police provided the family with an event number for the incident at their request. The release emphasized that no one was arrested, trespassed, or forced to leave the park. Body worn cameras confirmed the details provided in the release.
The incident sparked widespread discussion online, with users questioning the need for police involvement in a youth sports disagreement. Some commentators praised the child's abilities, while others criticized the league for the interaction. The police department maintained that the situation remained a civil dispute between the parties involved.
