A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot inside a Detroit home this morning.
Detroit police are investigating the incident that occurred around 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The home is located in the 12900 block of Evergreen near I-96. The boy's mother was preparing breakfast when she heard a loud pop sound. She then found the child injured. A 4-year-old sibling was also in the house but was not hurt.
Police Chief Todd Bettison said the firearm was registered to the mother. He described the weapon as unsecured inside the residence. Bettison expressed confidence that the child will survive the injuries. He noted that the trauma of the event is tragic.
Chief Bettison stated that parents are responsible for keeping their weapons secure. He advised the use of gun locks or gun safes. He warned that those who fail to secure their guns may be held accountable. The chief noted that Detroit police stations provide free gun locks. He specifically pointed to the Sixth Precinct on Warwick near Plymouth for residents to obtain them.
The boy remains in critical condition as of Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing. Detroit police are reviewing the scene and interviewing family members.
