Three men were wounded and detained by Jordanian security forces on Monday morning in the Karak governorate. The Public Security Directorate confirmed the arrests followed a shootout at dawn in the region south of Amman. No officers were injured during the operation.
The incident stems from an attack that occurred on Friday in the village of Hammoud. At the time, a funeral was being held at a local Greek Orthodox church. Reports indicate that three individuals participated in the shooting. The village is home to a minority Christian population.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya identified the three arrested men as those responsible for the incident. He spoke to the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka to confirm that security services had captured the individuals behind what he called a terrorist act. Al-Faraya noted that the suspects offered fierce resistance before being subdued while suffering severe injuries.
The minister stated that the men were identified early in the investigation. Security teams used all available means to locate and apprehend them. The directorate described the operation as fulfilling its duties against the perpetrators.
Authorities have not named the three suspects. Reuters reported that the directorate did not specify any links to Islamist militant groups. No group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist against the outlaws of Islam. He warned against anyone seeking to undermine the unity of the Jordanian people.
The Public Security Directorate stated that terrorism has no place among them. The statement described the three men as having met their just fate.
