Matt Painter told listeners on The Ride with JMV that the Boilermakers need a dose of competitive fear. He spoke on the Andy Mohr Automotive Group hotline before Monday's season opener against Gonzaga in Las Vegas. The No. 15 Zags defeated Purdue 78 to 72 at T-Mobile Arena.

Painter said the team's recent exhibition at UConn provided a necessary wake-up call. Purdue has not won that matchup in four years. He noted that losing to a team that dominates every phase of the game makes it difficult to hide from reality. The experience toughens the roster and reveals specific weaknesses.

The coach detailed the issues exposed during that loss. Purdue shot 2-for-25 from beyond the arc and took poor shots late in the shot clock. They also lost the battle on the boards and in turnovers. Painter described this as losing the possession war. He added that the difference between the starters and the bench became apparent against a top-10 opponent.

He emphasized that the team is not yet ready for that level of competition. The purpose of playing UConn is to prepare for upcoming challenges. Painter told his young players they must be unafraid of anyone but aware that opponents can beat them if they are not right. He stated that a lack of competitive fear leads to defeat.

Painter also discussed his recruiting philosophy, prioritizing production over raw talent. He observed that coaches often fall for players with high potential who have not yet delivered results. He prefers to analyze 35 games of data to see if a player rebounds, handles the ball well, and makes free throws. He argued that visual scouting can be biased.

In Monday's loss, Daniel Jacobsen led Purdue with 22 points. Gonzaga made 26 of 34 free throws, while Purdue made 15 of 21. According to Purdue Athletics, the Boilermakers host Valparaiso at Mackey Arena on Friday for their home opener.
