Police recovered $13,847 in cash from gaming machines at Maria’s Gaming Café in Addison after four men allegedly raided the business in the early hours of Thursday morning. The theft occurred during a coordinated break-in that involved two stolen vehicles and three loaded firearms.
Authorities allege the group arrived at approximately 4:32 a.m. in a stolen black Dodge Durango and a stolen white BMW. The vehicles backed into parking spaces in front of the cafe on Lake Street near Bruce Avenue. Five individuals, four of whom were armed, entered the business. They used sledgehammers and a crowbar to smash gaming machines and remove cash boxes. The group remained inside for about two minutes before fleeing in the two cars.
The chase began when the BMW drove over spike strips during the getaway. Three occupants from that vehicle moved into the Durango, which then held eight people. Officers from the Elmhurst Police Department attempted to stop the Durango near Lake Street and Route 83, but the driver fled. The pursuit continued as Villa Park police joined on North Avenue. The Durango reportedly reached speeds exceeding 100 mph. Police deployed additional spike strips to stop the vehicle.
All eight occupants exited the Durango and ran north across Interstate 290 into a residential area near Van Buren Street and 31st Avenue in Bellwood. Three guns fell out of the vehicle during the escape. A foot pursuit involving K-9 units, drones, and officers from multiple agencies led to the custody of four men. The suspects are Keonte Adams, 20; Dajuan Johnson, 24; Kyronte McCondichie, 20; and Daryl Nesbit, 19.
Investigators found two Glock handguns and a Zastava AK-style firearm inside the Durango. Prosecutors stated that one handgun had a device attached that converted it from semiautomatic to fully automatic. Officers also recovered a sledgehammer, a pry bar, and a cash box from that vehicle. Police found two additional guns and another sledgehammer inside the BMW.
A DuPage County judge granted the state’s motion to deny pretrial release for all four defendants. Each man faces charges including armed violence, unlawful possession of a machine gun, burglary, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal damage to property, and aggravated fleeing and eluding. The defendants are scheduled to return to court on Nov. 23.
The investigation began as part of a broader effort by Addison police and other DuPage County agencies to address a series of burglaries at gaming establishments in the region. Law enforcement agencies involved in the operation included the Addison Police Department, Villa Park Police Department, and the Illinois State Police.
