The Chicago Bears acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans on Thursday. The move aims to fix a defense that has struggled to generate pressure from the middle of the line. Simmons joins the team with a first start scheduled for Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks.
Simmons entered the league when the Titans selected him 19th overall in 2019. Over eight seasons, he established himself as a dominant interior presence. He has played 80% of Tennessee's defensive snaps in every year except his rookie campaign. This season, he has logged 87% of those snaps for the Titans.
The Bears have searched for a disruptor on the interior since trading for defensive end Montez Sweat in 2023. General Manager Ryan Poles has added various linemen, but the unit has not produced consistent pressure. Heading into Week 8, the Bears' tackles have recorded one sack and 12 pressures. Simmons leads the league in tackles with four sacks and 13 quarterback pressures for his new team.
Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen described the news of the trade as a major boost for the staff. He said the focus now is on integrating Simmons into the existing playbook. Allen noted that the team will narrow down specific schemes for the week to build a foundation of knowledge. "My mind starts go to OK, how can we utilize this guy? What are the things that we can do to really utilize his strengths?" Allen said.
Head Coach Ben Johnson expects Simmons to alter how opposing offenses protect the quarterback. Johnson said Simmons forces teams to account for his location, which affects both run and pass plays. "We look forward to seeing the impact he can have, not just on dictating some terms to the offense but also elevating those around him as well through his play and through his leadership," Johnson said.
Simmons has drawn 101 double teams this season, the second-most among tackles. That attention should open lanes for teammates like Sweat and Grady Jarrett. Simmons told his new linemen on Friday that he expects them to win one-on-one matchups when he attracts extra help. "If I'm getting in the double I expect you to go win," Simmons said. "That's pretty much what it is."
The Bears will manage Simmons' workload initially. Johnson cautioned that the veteran will need time to learn the game plan. The team expects him to play a significant portion of snaps as the season progresses. Allen emphasized that while Simmons will improve the unit, other players must still execute their roles to maximize the benefit.
Simmons will make his first appearance in a primetime game since 2023 on Monday. He expressed excitement about joining a team with recent success. "I think that's every dream of an NFL player to come to a situation like this, and like I said, I'm so excited," Simmons said.
