Gotham FC secured the NWSL Shield, the title awarded to the team with the best regular season record. Seattle Reign simultaneously locked in the eighth and final berth in the 2026 playoffs. These two outcomes define the end of the regular season, setting the stage for postseason play that begins this Friday.

The decision day slate featured eight games starting at the same time. These matches determined final standings and playoff seeding. Gotham FC’s victory cemented their status as the top regular season team. Seattle Reign’s win over Orlando Pride provided the final spot needed to join the postseason field.

Gotham FC manager Juan Carlos Amoros was named coach of the week for leading the team to this achievement. His tenure includes two NWSL Championships and a 2026 Challenge Cup title. The new Shield adds to that list of hardware. The team’s defensive structure, led by players like Guro Reiten and Madison Curry, played a central role in their success.

Individual performances also stood out on the final day. Sophia Wilson returned to Portland Thorns action after a two-game suspension. She scored two goals against Houston Dash. Midge Purce, the 2023 Championship MVP, recorded two assists for Gotham FC. She described the Shield as the most impressive trophy a player can win.

Other players made their marks as the season concluded. Kailen Sheridan of North Carolina Courage became the third goalkeeper in league history to reach 700 saves. She joined Jane Campbell and Alyssa Naeher in that statistical milestone. Sheridan made four saves on 12 shots in her team’s final match. Although North Carolina missed the playoffs, Sheridan’s performance earned her a spot on the weekly honors list.

Jess Fishlock of Seattle Reign played her final regular season game after announcing her retirement following the 2026 season. She was celebrated during the final home match. Fishlock contributed a backheel flick on Jordyn Bugg’s game-winning goal against Orlando Pride. The Reign’s defense, which included strong efforts from Madison Curry, will be a key factor as they look to advance in the upcoming playoffs.

The NWSL playoffs commence on Friday. The Attacking Third team of the week will now focus exclusively on players competing in the postseason. This shift marks the transition from regular season tracking to playoff coverage. Fans and analysts will watch how regular season form translates into high-stakes postseason results.
