Michigan State fans watched a new face take the floor at center court on Monday night. Jasiah Jervis, an 18-year-old guard from New York, started the season opener against Quinnipiac. This marked the first time a true freshman has begun a game for the Spartans since 2021.

Coach Tom Izzo has long held the belief that young players should wait their turn. He repeated this stance during the preseason, making Jervis’ selection a clear departure from recent tradition. Jervis, a top-40 recruit in the 2026 class, played 23 minutes. He finished with four points and three rebounds, following a 10-point effort in the exhibition game against Incarnate Word.

The starting center position remained unsettled until tip-off. Anton Bonke, a transfer, earned the nod over Jesse McCulloch and Ethan Taylor. Bonke had been pulled early in both exhibition games due to slow play. He responded with 11 points and 13 rebounds in 20 minutes against Quinnipiac.

The Spartans controlled the game through their backcourt and interior presence. Jeremy Fears Jr. led the team with 13 points and 11 assists. Coen Carr added 12 points. Michigan State scored 50 points in the paint, a testament to their physicality inside the arc.

The team addressed concerns raised by Izzo regarding transition play. The Spartans outscored Quinnipiac 36-8 on fast breaks. This statistical advantage helped secure the 96-59 victory. Michigan State will face Toledo on Thursday at 8 p.m. as it begins a challenging nonconference slate.
