O'Connor Returns to London Stage in 'Golden Boy' Cinema Release

Josh O'Connor will return to the London stage in a new cinema release of Clifford Odets’ "Golden Boy." National Theatre Live will screen the filmed production in theaters beginning Nov. 5. Tickets are currently available for purchase through the company’s website.

The performance originated at London’s Almeida Theatre, where it sold out its run. Sam Yates directed the production. O'Connor portrays Joe Bonaparte, a violinist who leaves music for professional boxing in pursuit of fame. The character faces a choice between his artistic past and the brutality of the ring.

A preview clip reveals the actor’s physical portrayal of this conflict. In the footage, O'Connor’s face is bloodied from a boxing injury. He embraces a younger version of his character who is playing the violin. The scene captures the internal struggle of a man trying to reclaim his musical identity.

The cast features Hayley Squires and Daniel Mays. A live string quartet performs during the show. O'Connor’s appearance marks his first return to the London stage in five years. During that interval, he won an Emmy for his role as King Charles in "The Crown." He also appeared in "La Chimera," "Challengers," "Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man," and "Disclosure Day."

The screening is part of the National Theatre Live series, which brings stage productions to global audiences. The release allows viewers to see the performance as it was captured at the Almeida. O'Connor has been discussed as a potential candidate for the James Bond role, but this film represents his next immediate screen appearance.
