David Crowley defeated Republican challenger Tom Tiffany to become the next governor of Wisconsin. The 40-year-old Milwaukee County executive secured the projected win in a race marked by unusual twists in the Democratic primary. Tiffany conceded the election from his watch party in Wausau on Tuesday night.

Crowley’s path to the top of the ticket was not straightforward. He first announced his bid for the Democratic nomination on September 9, 2025. However, on July 8, 2026, he stepped back from the race. A campaign release noted that stagnant poll numbers indicated he would not secure the nomination for the fall election. Within 24 hours, he endorsed Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, citing her ability to build a winning coalition.

Rodriguez exited the race days later due to a financial scandal involving her campaign manager. Crowley re-entered the primary with the support of Governor Tony Evers. Crowley explained the decision to return, stating, “When I made my decision to suspend this campaign, it was based off of the data and the facts that we had at that moment.” He added, “We learned that that data, those set of facts, were false. So, we got back in the race because this is not about me, this is about the people of Wisconsin.”

Crowley trailed State Representative Francesca Hong in almost every poll during the remainder of the primary. In the early morning of August 12, the day after the primary election, Crowley won by a margin of approximately 3,700 votes. Hong joined Crowley the following morning for a Democratic Party unity breakfast, helping the party consolidate behind him.

Tuesday’s result makes Crowley the first Black person to serve as governor in Wisconsin history. He was raised in Milwaukee by an electrician father and a mother who worked in service industries. As a child, both parents struggled with addiction and mental health issues. The family faced eviction and lost their home when Crowley was 10 years old.

Crowley attended Milwaukee public schools and graduated from Bay View High School. He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2006 and graduated in 2024. He worked on various Democratic political campaigns before entering elected office. He won a seat in the Wisconsin Assembly for the 17th district in 2017. He was first elected Milwaukee County executive in 2020 and won re-election in 2024. Crowley and his wife, Ericka, live in Milwaukee and raise three daughters.
